Surrounded by the river Doubs on three sides and by a steep bluff on the fourth, Besançon has baffled military strategists from Julius Caesar to the great military engineer, Vauban, 1800 years later. Today, this hilly town with twisting streets, dominated by a citadel, is known for its delightful setting and fine parks. The city used to be an old clock-making centre which is commemorated in the local museum.
